Shock win for Uruguay over Fiji Shakes up the Ranking Table

Today the rugby World Cup experienced one of the biggest shocks in its history[1] with the 10th ranked country in the world Fiji losing 30 - 27 to Uruguay, the 3rd weakest ranked side (18th) in the tournament going into the match.

Consequently, Uruguay more than doubled their ranking score and moved up two places to 16th in the World Cup ranking, leapfrogging Canada and Tonga. Fiji on the other hand lost ranking points but managed to hold onto their 10th position for the time being.

This surprise result in Pool D splits the group wide open and will make the next round of games on Sunday 29th September even more interesting. Wales take on Australia and Uruguay face a Georgian side now ranked only one position above them. Both matches will be the most closely contested of the tournament in terms of ranking scores and the results will influence the outcome of the Pool.

Finally, despite Fiji’s nightmare tournament so far, they remain the 10th best team in worldwide rugby and they have every potential to create disruptive results for their remaining Pool D opponents Georgia and Wales. Things are certainly getting exciting!
